CHAPTER TEN

Introductions

Maria spun around at Prince Damian’s voice. The man was standing at the rail just out of sight of Maria’s original position.

She cursed silently, willing her face into a neutral expression. It was stuffy in the cabin.

Prince Damian chuckled. “Never liked it much myself. Though I think you’ll find that there’s not much to see out here in the dark.”

He turned his face outward toward the sea. Maria followed his gaze, her mermaid eyes allowing her to see the world around them clearly. The ocean was dazzling in the dark. Rather than it’s usual vibrant blue, as it would appear in full sunlight, the water shone a deep sapphire that pulsed with the energy of each mighty swell. Smaller pockets of movement created a texture to the landscape that sent moonlight bouncing in every direction. Her breath caught, She had never seen the ocean like this before.

Maria shifted her eyes back and had to work to keep the awe out of her voice. Not much to see, she agreed.

Andrea leaned over the railing to look at Prince Damian. “Why are you out here? I thought you were sleeping too.”

Maria bit back a groan and pinched her sister. Andrea shot her a glare before turning back to the Prince.

Damian shrugged. “It was stuffy in the cabin,” he replied with a wry grin. He sobered quickly, however. “It reminds me a bit too much of Susanoo’s boat. Its cleaner and not as dank… but a bit too similar right now.”

They fell silent. Maria watched the Prince as he stared into the darkness. She knew very little about the man in front of her. Everything he had told her thus far had been a lie. But that wasn’t so different than what she was doing, so she was hardly in a position to judge.

Still, she couldn’t help but be curious. What was his country like? And the humans? Neither the Prince or his companions had harmed them, even if that was due to ignorance more than acceptance. Maybe she could go just for a little while. It wasn’t particularly difficult to hold her human form.

Maria felt a small stab of guilt at the thought. She turned out towards the ocean and contemplated their next move. They had failed to get into the water, but there would be another opportunity. If they waited until daylight, they could do some proper scouting to find the best place to sneak over the side. Then it was only a matter of finding a night that the Prince wasn’t so restless.

As the sky began to lighten and the oppressive darkness of the ocean began to fade, the Prince shifted his gaze slightly upward.

A gentle smile touched his lips. “I’ve always loved sunrise,” he said.

The horizon slowly blossomed into a vibrant orange, the ocean reflecting the hue and casting the world around them in a brilliant gold. Little accents of purple danced around in the water.

Andrea drew in a breath. “It’s beautiful,” she whispered reverently.

The Prince nodded.
